River and Trail and a team of smart people will be presenting...
The 2019, fourth annual
Rompin Rockwood 10k, 25k & 50k Trail Ultra
Rockwood Park, Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada.
Passing the torch for Rockwood,
Hackmatack Trail Racing, Sadie and I are stepping away from the Rompin Rockwood as race directors for next year’s race in 2019. We have found someone to take it over and will certainly update, provide new links and websites if needed when we have psyphered out the details We are doing this for a few reasons.
- I originally started this race in 2016 because I was frustrated that nobody was doing a trail running race on Rockwood’s amazing network of over 55k of trails. Now we have lots of awesome options. Our Buddy Boon Kek started another fun race that involves beer the same year as us Called River and Trails and Ales. Now there is even a weekly, low cost, shorter race held there called the Rat races started by Marc Gallant.
- When I started this race in 2016 SJ’s trail running community, let alone NB’s, was just sprouting. It has grown so quickly in the last three years. This spring 120 kids turned up for a weekly trail running group started by Shelley and Evan Doucet. As well as a beginner trail running group for the second year, a regular running group that meets at various trails around the area, and the Rat race series mentioned above. It’s booming, popping and humming along nicely.
- The style of event that we like to host involves a gathering place with good food and socializing. The A-Frame facility at Rockwood has not been reliable for us, and is difficult to coordinate from a distance.
- I would like to concentrate my efforts on putting on trail races, group runs and just building the trail running community in my town of St. George. It is still nonexistent there except for 1 or two other people. As part of building that community I have also taken on a large trail building project just 5 minutes north of St. George with 27 K of trails on Crown and Irving land that I hope will be approved.
- We will of course always do the Herring Run as it is the most fun and at our house. What could be easier? We will be adding more trail runs in the St. George area in the years to come.
- Currently as of October 19th, 2018, we have found someone willing to take on the race for the 2019 season. We are still working out the details and will update the Rompin’ Rockwood page on hackmatacktrailracing.com when we have everything lined up. It’s a wonderful thing to have a 25k trail loop in the city of Saint John and who knows, I might even be able to race it one day. So stay tuned at www.hackmatacktrailracing.com

The Course:
The Rompin Rockwood 25k and 50k course winds its way around Rockwood's many single track trails with only a bit of dirt roads and a small pinch of bitter pavement to build mental constitution. The trails are fairly technical with no super big hills, just lots of little ones. The start and finish will be at the Kiwanis A Frame by the FIsher lake beach. There will be an aid station (Maryanne aid station) roughly one third of the way around and then again at about two thirds along the 25k loop. It is in the green circle in the middle-ish of the map where the Zoo trail kisses Maryanne. You will hit this aid station 2 times for every 25k loop you do. Local Trail runner Glenn Brown suggested this after the inaugural race and It's a great idea. Another aid station will be at the start/finish (s/f aid station) Check the maps out below for intricate details. And below there is a file for a high rez printable map so you can be all smart! I know I do for every race I enter!
The 10k is still a bit twisty and technical with some pavement, but still a challenge. The 10k will NOT have any aid stations on the course or drop bag places, but the S/F aid is all yours at the end of your race.
DROP BAGS. Yes sir! this year we will work this out so racers in the 25k and 50k can have a (smallish) drop bag at the Maryanne aid. Please no 60 lb duffle bags. 50k racers will have to get their business together in their drop bags at the Start/Finish area by 7:30am so our volunteer vehicle can truck 'em on down and get them organized. For 25k racers, your business needs to be together for your drop bags by 10:30 at the Start/Finish area so we can get them to the aid station on time.
Don't forget to go for a swim after the race in Fisher lake!

Local, organic food!
There will be a free, locally sourced, mostly organic luncheon for racers and volunteers starting around 1 pm. Like all Hackmatack Trail Racing events, we have organized this to be an event to "hang out" at after the race for a bit. We think this is a great way to have trail runners meet each other and build the local community.
Registration for the 2018 Rompin Rockwood will be open February 4th @ 8 am! AST
it closes on Thursday, May 17th at Midnight
Sorry, NO "day of" registration.
Sign in time for races pending
on
The reason is for safety. We want to give a list of all runners to the volunteers before they are sent out along the course so they can be sure nobody got stuck in a hole or worse. They will also know your name and any special health concerns you may have. And even if you are all tough and healthy, we just want to be prepared.
Cut off times for 50k....
We are imposing a 5 hour time limit on your first lap. If you do not think you can make this, please sign up for the 25k as you'll have plenty of time to finish one lap.
Anyone is welcome to try but please be prepared to be asked to stop racing at the aid station at the 1 lap mark near the Start/finish if you do not make the cut off time.
A rough gauge for your 50k time on this technical course is to take you road marathon time and multiply it by to 2.
Aid stations
There will be two aid stations for the 25k in the middle of the park where Maryanne and the Zoo trail touch. Its the same aid station really but you'll hit it twice. The 50k racers will use this aid station as well as an aid station at the start/finish, (s/f aid station) also marked in green. 50k races will have 5 aid stations evenly placed along the course. We will offer water, local cider, homemade energy bars, dates and baked potatoes with sea salt at both.
50k racers are encouraged to leave a drop bag with your own snacks and drink at the S/F aid station that you can easily access upon finishing your first lap.
Agua. .. .. . . . . . .
Everyone is encouraged to bring your own water and energy needs on the run, whether it be a hand held, hydration pack or waist pack as you may well be out enjoying the trail for a while on a hot/cold/wet spring day.
Although, we will have plenty of water and snacks on hand at both aid stations.
Camping. . . . .
Camping is available in Rockwood park.
